Training Contract Applications 2026 and 2027

We help students with careers and applications, assisting them with writing cover letters, curriculum vitae, application questions, and Watson-Glaser tests. Our tutors have a strong understanding of how to tailor each application to the specific firm so that we maximise your chance of securing an interview. We also provide support for interviews and assessment centres through mock interviews, practice written exercises and mock presentations.

Assessment centres

Assessment centres are progressively becoming the standard for those who are applying for training contracts. Assessment centres for law firms and legal organisations are not as frightening and clinical as they may appear; they typically consist of a series of tests, exercises, and interviews designed to determine your suitability for a trainee position (or even a vacation scheme place) with a law firm or legal organisation. It is likely that the assessment centre activities you do will be similar to the kind of work you would be doing as a trainee solicitor or student barrister.

How can we help?

Interview based on competencies

This is often an hour-long one-on-one interview with a partner. At the completion of such an interview, the candidate will be asked a series of questions to ascertain their ability to demonstrate particular competencies such as communication and organisational skills, problem-solving and goal-setting abilities, teamwork ability, and commercial awareness. For instance, they may ask you to recall a time when you have shown leadership characteristics or made an influence on another person's life. Since a consequence, preparing for these competency-based questions is challenging, as you cannot foresee what will be asked of you. Our tutors can prepare students for the types of questions they will encounter.  Our Training Contract Applications tutor can help you to evaluate your prior employment or personal experiences so that you can rapidly provide examples of your talents shown in a range of scenarios.

Presentations

The legal firm may ask you to deliver a presentation to a small group of individuals or to prepare for an advocacy duty on their behalf. It is possible that you may be given a subject to prepare for or that you will be required to put together a presentation on the day. When it comes to preparing pupils for these sorts of presentations, our tutors are experts. With the guidance of our tutors, students may achieve a professional appearance while also learning how to exhibit their ability to follow an argument utilising logic and reasonable thinking.

Other potential activities we can help you with

  • Help with a report-writing assignment. This is designed to assess your written communication abilities. This sort of task is meant to assess your ability to prioritise and make judgments under time constraints in a high-pressure, high-volume work environment.

  • Help with a timed writing assignment. This is based on legal principles that will test your legal knowledge and comprehension.

  • Help with a role-playing exercise. This may include a pretend hearing, a simulated telephone conversation with a client or a mock telephone conversation with a solicitor, or anything similar. Your capacity to communicate effectively, recall and apply knowledge, and negotiate will all be tested throughout this process, among other things.

  • Our Watson-Glaser test Psychometric Tutor can help with non-verbal reasoning exams. These are critical thinking exercises, and verbal reasoning tests are examples of tests that might be administered. Our tutors can prepare students for this by utilising online tools such as Assessment Day to help you practise.
